Lotto No. 46

Rybák Jaromír (Pilsen 1952)

Red Fish
topaz glass, fused in a mould, signed and dated Jaromír Rybák 2003, 51 x 90 x 18.5 cm (Zí)

After studying at the Glassmaking Secondary School in Železný Brod, he continued his studies at prof. Libenský’s studio at the AAAD, where he graduated in 1979. In 1998, he became one of the founding members of the artists’ group Rubikon, which was founded by the theorist Ivo Křen. Alongside Jaromír Rybák, the other members were Bohumil Eliáš, Jan Exnar, Marian Volráb, and Jaroslav Matouš. Rubikon was a loose group comprised of the leading glass artists who exhibited together in the Czech Republic and abroad.
In the 1980s, Jaromír Rybák focused on cut sculptures, which he worked on in a very experimental way. He often fused the sculptures and inserted drawings and other elements between the layers of glass, thereby creating new stories within the sculptures. Ten years later, he began to experiment with fused sculpture, which he combined with other techniques. Thus, original works were created, often inspired by the effort to capture natural phenomena and anomalies. The author is primarily attracted to the undersea world of fish and other animals.
The work on offer, Red Fish is a gallery example both in terms of its format as well as its execution in attractive golden topaz glass.
The author’s connection of fused sculptures with bronze sculpture, which he focused on primarily in the 1990s, is also interesting. Works inspired by ancient times are full of mystical secrecy and fairytale fantasy.
A typical example of this approach to glass is the Hatteria on offer.
